Japan Scenic Byway: Kumano

On March 11th from 10:00~19:30 the “Japan Scenic Byway: Kumano” symposium was held at the Big U in Tanabe City.  Brad Towle, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau’s International Tourism Promotion and Development director, along with the Urano Yasuyuki, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau’s Chief, were members of the panel discussion.   Brad Towle offered a foreigner’s view on the Nanki region.  The panel discussion was filmed by WBS television and will be broadcasted on February, 25.

Tourism Presentation for JCI

On August 23rd, the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau made a one hour presentation on balancing preservation and tourism development for members of the Junior Chamber International Shirahama Tanabe (part of the Worldwide Federation of Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs).The meeting was held from 20:20~21:10 at the Vocational Training Center in Tanabe City.

Kumano Kodo Inspection by Turismo de Santiago de Compostela

For 3 days from June 24th the Tourism PR director of Turismo de Santiago de Compostela came to inspect the core area of Kumano including the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route and Kumano Hongu Taisha. With a request from the International Culture Dept. of Wakayama Prefecture, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau attended this inspection as an interpreter and guide.

We visited sites along the Kumano Kodo by car including Takijiri-oji, Takahara Kumano-jinja Shrine and Tsugizakura-oji before touring the Wakayama World Heritage Center in Hongu. We also walked a short section of pilgrimage route, 7 km from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha, to feel the cultural scenery of Kumano.

TV Wakayama Live Interview

On June 27th Brad Towle, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau’s International Tourism Promotion and Development Director, was interview live on TV Wakayama’s News Corner.The interview took place at the branch studio at the Big U facility in Tanabe City. Brad’s personal history, tourism promotion, the importance of bilingual maps and promotional materials were discussed.

The interview went smoothly and we would like to thank TV Wakayama for inviting us onto your show.

Tanabe Rotary Club

On May 31st, Brad Towle, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau’s International Tourism Promotion and Development Director, made a one hour presentation at the Tanabe Rotary Club.  It was a very basic presentation about the Tourism Bureau, current initiatives and future vision.

On May 29th Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau’s 2007 annual general meeting was held.
Major business plans for 2007 are listed below.

 Installation of contents management system to enrich homepage
 Organize a web photo contest
 Tanabe’s visual information screening project
 Kumano Kodo map English version
 Press tours for domestic and oversea media
 TV program tie-up
 Development of Tanabe novelties
 Event and campaign projects
 Other projects such as communication level up seminars etc.

Regions in Japan that we will focus our promotion efforts are from Tokyo metropolitan area, Keihanshin area (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe). International tourism will focus on independent travelers or small groups from western countries.

We will also focus on improving infrastructure and information for the upcoming Aikido International Congress which will be help in Tanabe City in October 2008. We hope to create a welcoming environment for visiting aikidoists.

Tanabe Hamayu Rotary Club

On April 3rd, Brad Towle, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau’s International Tourism Promotion and Development Director, made a 30 minute presentation at the Tanabe Hamayu Rotary Club.  It was a very basic presentation about the Tourism Bureau, current initiatives and future vision.

Tanabe Chamber of Commerce Presentation

On March 22nd the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau made a presentation for the Tanabe Chamber of Commerce concerning Tourism in Tanabe City.  Our current initiatives, goals, and philosophy were discussed.  Local businesses were very interested to open up new markets in regards to tourism.  We hope to work together to create quality products while respecting local traditions and the environment.  Cooperation on a regional level, across many fields, is important for our bureau to reach its goal of creating a sustainable tourism destination.
