Inaugural Press Tour – Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau

The Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau held its first press tour on October 17th and 18th.  This one night, two day press tour was attended by eight companies, mostly international.  Our bureau spend many weeks organizing and preparing for this tour as it was the beginning of our efforts to promote the Kumano region both domestically and around the world.

Half of the participants arrived from Tokyo by airplane at the Nanki-Shirahama Airport. The remaining members arrived by train from the Osaka area.  We immediately drove to the Ryujin area to watch a Chainsaw art demonstration by Keiji Kikoro, a world champion.  Everyone was enthralled by this powerful and dynamic art form.

We spent the night at the historic Kamigoten Ryokan in Ryujin Onsen.  After a group dinner everyone enjoyed the soothing hot mineral waters.

On day two the group visited the world heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes and Kumano Hongu Taisha before returning to Tanabe.

The last event was an Aikido demonstration and experience.  In October 2008 Tanabe City will hold the 10th International Aikido Congress.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported us with this successful icebreaking press tour.  We are looking forward to introducing this special region to many more people!

Manseiro Ryokan has joined the Kumano Travel community!

Manseiro Ryokan is a located on the edge of Katsuura Bay across from the tourist pier, within walking distance of the Kii-Katsuura station.  The building itself is older but the atmosphere is friendly and comfortable.  The traditional Japanese Kaiseki meals, with a focus on fresh local products, is a highlight of a stay at Manseiro.  There are both Japanese and Western style rooms.  There are hot spring baths in the facility, but guests can also take the ferry across to the neighboring Hotel Urashima and soak there for free, including the famous Bokido onsen cave bath overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
