● Ryokan stay, Traditional Japanese Inn
● Walk the World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route
● Delicious local cuisine

Day 1
The tour will meet at the Shin-Osaka station and then travel by charter bus along the west coast of the Kii-Hanto peninsula to Tanabe City.  After lunch at a local restaurant a walking tour will introduce some of the history of this rural city.

In the afternoon we will visit Akitsuno Garten, an old elementary school that was renovated and now serves as a focal point of farm tourism, hosting activities for visitors to experience the agricultural culture of the region.

Tanabe city is a major ume and mikan (orange) producing area of Japan. Farm stay hosts will pick guests up at Akitsuno Garten and take them to their homes for the night.  This tour will be the first international group to stay at this new farm stay initiative.

Day 2
After breakfast guests will help out on the family farm, depending on family jobs will vary.  This time of year is prime mikan season so most farms will be busy in their orchards, picking, sorting and packing. The group will meet up again at Akitsuno Garten for a buffet lunch of local produced, seasonal foods.

In the afternoon the tour will head east into the mountains to visit sites along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route including Takijiri-oji, the historical and spiritual entrance into the sacred mountains.  The final destination is Kawayu Onsen in Hongu.  This is a natural wonder, were hot spring water bubbles to the surface of the river.  Here you will have a chance to bathe in this unique onsen.  Accommodation is the Fujiya Ryokan, across from the river bath.  It is a beautiful Japanese inn, which also features hot springs baths and excellent meals.

Day 3
The tour will drive to Hosshinmon-oji after breakfast to begin a 7 kilometre walk on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.  This section of trail runs through forests and isolated ridge-top villages, before arriving at Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the main shrines of Kumano.  There are excellent viewpoints of the mountains along the way.  The Kumano Kodo is one of two pilgrimage routes registered as UNESCO World Heritage, the other being the Way of St. James in Spain.

After lunch the tour will visit a few more sites before heading back to Shin-Osaka station in the evening.

Manseiro Ryokan has joined the Kumano Travel community!

Manseiro Ryokan is a located on the edge of Katsuura Bay across from the tourist pier, within walking distance of the Kii-Katsuura station.  The building itself is older but the atmosphere is friendly and comfortable.  The traditional Japanese Kaiseki meals, with a focus on fresh local products, is a highlight of a stay at Manseiro.  There are both Japanese and Western style rooms.  There are hot spring baths in the facility, but guests can also take the ferry across to the neighboring Hotel Urashima and soak there for free, including the famous Bokido onsen cave bath overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
