Tanabe Machiya Townhouse: Stay, Eat & Experience (Monitor Tour)


Tanabe City is a small city on the west coast of the Kii Peninsula south of Osaka in the rugged Kii peninsula.It has a long history of pilgrimage and boasted a rich natural and cultural background.The city center is a classic seaside rural city, with fishing ports, train stations, and small narrow streets, which date back to the Edo period.Tanabe city has begun to utilize its Machiya townhouse history in unique ways, it hopes to preserve these cultural icons.This is your chance to Stay, Eat & Experience Tanabe’s Machiya and give feedback to help improve our community.

Number of Participant: 20 total. Groups from 2 to 6 are able to join. Who can join?: Non-Japanese in groups of 2 to 6.
Tour Date: Until March 30th, 2013
※ Not available on Wednesdays, Sundays, February 21, and March 21.

French Agent Tour in Kumano


From February 24th to 26th, Wakayama Prefecture and Kyoto sponsored a FAM trip for 4 travel agents from France. The TanabeCity Kumano Tourism Bureau supported the tour during their visit to the Tanabe City region.

The tour visited sites along the KumanoKodo pilgrimage routes, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Yunomine Onsen and Kawayu Onsen. KumanoHayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha were visited to complete the pilgrimage circuit of the Kumano Sanzan.Katsuura Onsen and the fresh seafood was a enjoyed part of the trip.

All of the agents were very enthusiastic to learn about these off-the-beaten-path destinations and were interested in including them in the future tour projects.

Kumano Kotsu Sightseeing Bus has joined the Kumano Travel community!

Kumano Kotsu Sightseeing Bus has joined the Kumano Travel community!

The Kumano Kotsu sightseeing bus is a convenient way to visit the main sites of Kumano.  There are two routes available.  One makes a circuit of the three Kumano Sanzan shrines: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and the Kumano Nachi Taisha.  The other is a shorter route that focuses on Nachisan: Kumano Nachi Taisha, the Daimon-zaka section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, and Nachi falls.  These tours are great options for those who want to see the sites in an efficient way.

Iriomote-jima International Tourism Workshop

Iriomote-jima International Tourism Workshop



Brad Towle, the International Tourism Promotional and Development Director of the Tanabe City Kumano TourismBureau, was invited to Iriomote-jima, a small island in the southern region of Okinawa Prefecture, to run workshops on International Tourism.
The focus of the workshops were on the philosophy and infrastructure needed to accept international tourist to the tropical island.

The Iriomote-jima Ecotourism Society organized the workshops which were attended by 11 participants including accommodations, dive shops, trekking, and kayaking companies.

Tanabe Machiya Press Tour

On February 15th to 16th, Tanabe CityKumano Tourism Bureau sponsored a Press tour for Alena Eckelmann, a freelance journalist living in Kumano.
The press tour was based on the Monitor tour taking place in Tanabe city focusing on the Machiya townhouse initiatives, such as the Konyamachiya Townhouse property.
An art workshop at Mojike House and lunch at the Machiya Cafe were included in the visit.
Her article will appear in the March issue of the Kansai Scene.

From February 6th to 8th, Wakayama and Nara Prefecture sponsored a Press tour for a Travel Magazine from Taiwan. The Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau supported the tour during their visit to the Tanabe City region.
The tour visited sites along the KumanoKodo pilgrimage routes, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Yunomine Onsen and Kawayu Onsen. The short walk along the section from Fushiogami-oji to Sangen-jaya with a local guide, Sennin-buro in Kawayu Onsen and the TraditionalCostume Experience in Hongu were also included in this tour.

From February 8th to 9th, Wakayama Prefecture sponsored a Press tour for 2 journalists from France. The TanabeCity Kumano Tourism Bureau supported the tour during their visit to the Tanabe City region.
The tour visited sites along the KumanoKodo pilgrimage routes, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Yunomine Onsen and Kawayu Onsen. KumanoHayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha were visited to complete the pilgrimage circuit of the Kumano Sanzan.
Both journalists were impressed by the region and are hoping to write more about the region in future publications.

From Feb 5 to 8th, Wakayama Prefecture sponsored a press tour for Juan Antonio www.narrogeographic.blogspot.com, a radio personality and travel writer from Spain.The Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau supported the tour during their visit to the Tanabe City region.
The tour visited sites along the KumanoKodo pilgrimage routes, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Yunomine Onsen and natural wonder Kawayu Onsen. The Oto matsuri in Shingu at the KumanoHayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha were also visited.
In addition to the sacred sites of the region, an overnight at farm stay in Tanabe was included to experience the local agriculture lifestyle.
We believe that this tour showcased a side of Japan that didn't fit the typical stereotype of Japan that many people have. Thank you very much to all of those who participated and helped organized this FAM trip.
