Tanabe City is a small city on the west coast of the Kii Peninsula south of Osaka in the rugged Kii peninsula.  It has a long history of pilgrimage and boasted a rich natural and cultural background.  The city center is a classic seaside rural city, with fishing ports, train stations, and small narrow streets, which date back to the Edo period.  Tanabe city has begun to utilize its Machiya townhouse history in unique ways, it hopes to preserve these cultural icons.  This is your chance to Stay, Eat & Experience Tanabe’s Machiya and give feedback to help improve our community.

Number of Participant: 20 total. Groups from 2 to 6 are able to join.
Who can join?: Non-Japanese in groups of 2 to 6.
Tour Date: Until March 30th, 2013 
Not available on Wednesdays, Sundays, February 21, and March 21.
Tour Length: 1 night, 2 days

Guides: This is a self-guided tour, but staff will meet with you periodically during the tour including meeting you at the Kii-Tanabe station, and seeing you off at the Kii-Tanabe station. You will need to catch the train in Osaka on your own.

Addition to UNESCO Property "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range"

In October 2016 an additional 22 sites were added to the UNESCO Property "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" included Tokei-jinja shrine in Tanabe and the Akagi-goe route near Kumano Hongu Taisha.
