Japanese National Guidelines for Translation

The Ministry of Tourism has released a national guideline for translation into English, Korean and Chinese.

This guideline outlines rules and formats to increase consistence in translation across the country.

It also recommends and outlines where translations should be included, such as on signs, in museums, on public transportation, etc.

The consultation and preparation started in October 2013 and the final document was released on March 5, 2014.

There were multiple meetings and briefing with experts and professionals from across Japan.

Brad Towle, the Director of International Tourism Promotion and Development in the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau was a special advisor on the committee.

We are very thankful for this leadership and hope that it will increase awareness across the country, and lead to better and more consistent infrastructure for international tourists visiting Japan.
