The owners of the accommodations in the Hongu area, Kumano Hongu Tourist Association, and the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau held a meeting focusing on the Omotenashi, or hospitality, for international visitors.
The Hongu area has seen a strong increase in international visitors, and the local organizations are constantly looking at new ways and projects to make their stay easier and more memorable.
This type of grassroots development is a key component of the regions progressive tourism strategy, to have many levels of stakeholders involved in the planning and implementation stages.
Kumano Kodo-no-Yado Reimei Lodging House is located in the small village of Ukegawa at the confluence of the Oto river and Kumano-gawa, 3 kilometers south of the Hongu village townsite. The large yellow sign is easy to spot! One the first floor is a Chinese restaurant and on the second floor are the three guestrooms. It is a simple, basic, budget facility run by the cordial Mr. Nojiri. The rooms are Japanese style, with shared bath and toilet facilities. The trailhead to the Kumano Kodo Kogumotori-goe section is nearby. The Ukegawa bus stop is across the street so public busses are convenient to use. Famous dishes at the restaurant are gyoza dumplings using local Kumano beef, and Wakayama Ramen noodles.
The Holistic Space Japan - Medical & Resort is the accumulation of the famous Dr. Kaname’s lifework, founded on over 40 years of professional experience. It was his dream to create a special facility offering a relaxed atmosphere in a site with an inspiring natural setting - a holistic space to heal and regenerate the body and soul - the first of its kind in Japan. This small, modern facility houses a clinic, hot spring baths, restaurant, meeting room, balcony, and guest rooms. The gardens are home to over 100 species of roses. Located in the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, a lovely walking trail offers access to a nearby lighthouse, views of the rugged coastline, and panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, perfect for a quiet retreat. Meals are creations of french-inspired dishes, using the best of the fresh, local produce.
